7 days of Diabetic Dieting for Adults

There are broad guidelines to help formulate a healthy diet for diabetic adults.  These include:

  • Restrict high sugar foods
  • Eat small portions, and spread your total calorie intake throughout the day
  • Control the number of carbohydrates you eat
  • Eat a variety of fruits, whole grains, and vegetables each day
  • Eat less fat
  • Limit your alcohol intake
  • Use less salt

Following these guidelines could lead to the following mealplans:


  1. 1/2 Grapefruit, oatmeal with low-fat milk, honey and flaz seeds
  2.  An apple, wholegrain cereal with low-fat milk
  3.  Orange juice, whole-grain toast with a low-fat spread and sugar-free jam.
  4. Low-fat, unsweetened yoghurt topped with strawberries and toasted oatmeal
  5. An English muffin with a poached egg, slice of low-fat cheese and slice of tomato
  6. Whole grain waffles with sugarless syrup and blueberries
  7. A fruit smoothie – banana, orange, strawberries, topped with chopped walnuts


Snack – twice a day

  1. A handful of nuts
  2. Fruit such as kiwi, or a pear
  3. One cup celery and carrots
  4. A small fruit yoghurt
  5. Air-popped popcorn
  6. Glass tomato or mixed vegetable juice
  7. Cottage cheese with nuts or fruit


  1. Pizza with vegetable toppings
  2. Salad of lettuce and vegetables topped with shrimp
  3. Shrimp or chicken salad sandwich
  4. Salad with chicken and nuts
  5. Whole-wheat sandwich with turkey, lite cheese, tomato and lettuce
  6. Chicken strips, orange slices, cucumber and ine nuts over rice, with low fat
  7. Baked potato topped with steamed or grilled vegetables and low-fat cheese.


  1. Grilled salmon with garlic mashed potatoes, peas and spinach
  2. Pork chop, lentils, salad and/or broccoli.
  3. Jumbalaya and salad
  4. Lean meat chili, tomato and onion salad
  5. Poached tilapia with mushrooms over rice, grilled carrots and peppers
  6. Scrambled eggs with tofu, corn and zucchini
  7. Spaghetti with shrimp and chopped kale

Fruit and sugar-free puddings make acceptable dessert.
