Diarrhea is basically defined as a medical condition in which one has an increase in frequency in bowel movement and an increase in loose stool elimination. There are many reasons for diarrhea some of which are totally against our control and some which are within our control. Some of these causes include the following;

1. Infection by a virus for example, herpes simplex virus can cause diarrhea that is usually spread easily. So anyone with a viral infection should be monitored against diarrhea as the probability of developing it is high.

2. Eating food or drinking water that has been contaminated with a bacteria or a parasite that is a causative agent of diarrhea will make you susceptible to the same. Proper hygiene in handling of food should be employed always to reduce the risk of such contamination as well as infections.

3. Some medications for example, antibiotics usually cause diarrhea especially after chronic therapy. Chronic antibiotic therapy will destroy the normal bacteria in our bowels causing diarrhea and sometimes infections as well.

Acute diarrhea could be as a result of factors such as; anxiety, side- effects of some other medications apart from antibiotic, increased consumption of alcohol as well as coffee has also been linked to the same.

Some long-term conditions causing diarrhea include the following; celiac disease, diabetes, irritable bowel syndrome, lactose intolerance, pancreatitis and ulcerative colitis.

In conclusion, some of our feeding habits like eating a lot of sweet foods as well as fatty foods could also cause diarrhea. Chronic diarrhea could dehydrate your body and so proper management aimed at re-hydrating the body should be initiated immediately.
