What is therapy?

Therapy and counseling (counseling) are types of treatment to improve mental wellbeing. These treatments can help people who are experiencing emotional or behavioral problems, or people who have a mental health disorder. Therapy is sometimes called psychotherapy or talk therapy. If you are taking medication to treat a mental health disorder, it is likely that the therapy improves the results you get with drugs.

In various types of therapy, they are using different techniques. In most types of therapy and counseling, the person receiving the treatment talks to a professional therapist. However, the therapy is not just talking about their problems. Therapy can teach you new ways of thinking about situations that upset you, and help you cope with your feelings. Therapy can help you cope with feelings of anger, fear, anxiety, shyness and panic. It can also provide tools to help you overcome low self-esteem and depression.

Is therapy and psychological counseling right for me?

It is possible that some people do not want professional therapy or counseling because they are ashamed of their problems. Others may feel that therapy and counseling is only for people with severe mental illness or “crazy” people. But that’s not true. Do not let the shame and fear keep you from getting the help you need. Good mental health is part of their health and wellbeing.

What I can expect from a therapy session or counseling?

The first time you meet with your doctor or therapist, you will talk about the problems you have and how you are feeling. Also, you can talk about the goals you want to achieve with their therapy. You and your doctor will decide how often you will meet. Your doctor, therapist or counselor will help you decide what is right for you.

What are the different types of therapy?

The different types of therapy and counseling are based on different ideas about how the brain works and what makes people act in certain ways. Many therapists use more than one type of technique to offer help. Some common types of therapies are listed below.

Family counseling helps family members understand the family problems and how to solve.

Cognitive therapy is also sometimes called cognitive behavioral therapy. It is based on the idea that thoughts are what give rise to feelings and actions. If you change the way people think about something, you can feel or act better even if the situation does not change. This type of therapy helps you understand the patterns of negative thinking or false feelings and behaviors that cause concern.

Behavioral therapy therapy sometimes called behavior modification. This treatment focuses on changing unwanted behaviors or unhealthy and replace them with healthy behaviors. This treatment often involves the use of a system of rewards and emphasizes positive behavior.

Psychoanalysis is a treatment that encourages you to think and talk about their memories and feelings from the past. The idea is that these reports will help you understand how it works and how it feels today.

Group Therapy is guided by a qualified leader. This training leads to a small group of people who have issues or similar problems. A group situation can improve the honest interaction with others. Group members can also support each other during times of crisis.

Couples therapy or marriage counseling can help couples solve problems together, to communicate and learn healthier ways to resolve the discrepancies.
