The most common cancer among all Africans is the skin cancer. This includes melanoma and non-melanoma. Approximately 13,000 cases are reported annually.

A tan is a sign of good health, but it can also be a sign that the skin has been damaged by ultraviolet radiation. When the sun damages the skin cells, melanin is precipitated on the surface to provide protection from attacks. As they slowly build the protection, your skin is darkening in response to damage. There are three types of skin cancer: the two most common are basal cell and squamous cells, which are easily treated. Although they can lead to disfigurement, they are rarely fatal. The third and most dangerous is the malignant melanoma.

There is strong evidence that melanomas occur in sun-damaged skin and people are particularly at risk when they have sudden bursts,or when people stay in places where the sun is very strong.

Children absorb up to 70-80% of UV, and can damage his or her life before the age of 18.

Although melanomas can affect most parts of the body, is the most common place for women in the legs, while in men it is in the torso and especially in the back.

In the past 60 years, damages to the ozone layer of our planet has increased the amount of harmful radiation reaching our skin. Scientists estimate that the ozone layer has been depleted by 3-6%, allowing up to 12% more UV radiation to reach us.

UV radiation is made up of UVA, UVB and UVC. UVA rays age the skin, while UVB rays burn the skin. UVC radiation is absorbed by the ozone layer in the upper atmosphere, but the destruction of the ozone layer is of great concern.

UV radiation does not feel like the heat in the skin. It may be felt even on a cool and cloudy day. Also, beware of reflective surfaces that can release harmful rays in sensitive places like the bottom of the chin.

If you really can not face being pale holiday during the summer months, there is a flourishing industry that is excellent in fake tanning. So rather be safe than sorry and apply a tanning lotion or cream. It is important to note that many do not contain a sunscreen ingredient.
