Health Tips with Air Travel

How can I improve air travel?

Most people have no problem when flying, but you can make air travel safer and more comfortable. Here are some tips:

  • Carry enough of all your medications in your carry-on bag. Ask your doctor if you should change your dosages if your eating and sleeping schedules will change when you reach your destination. Bring enough medication to last you throughout your journey. Take extra medicine in case your return is delayed.
  • If you have diabetes or epilepsy carry a notification and identification card such as “Diabetes Alert Card” from the American Diabetes Association (American Diabetes Association), call or write 800-DIABETES the American Diabetes Association, 1660 Duke St., Alexandria, VA 22314. Have the name and phone number of your doctor with you in case of an emergency. Remember to bring the names and dosages of all your medications.
  • The air in airplanes is dry, so drink nonalcoholic, decaffeinated and water to avoid dehydration.
  • Avoid thinking of any stress before the flight.

What I can do about the “jet lag” (upset because of jet lag)?

  • Get enough sleep before you travel.
  • Do not drink too much alcohol.
  • Eat well-balanced meals.
  • Avoid overeating.
  • Exercise as much as possible during your trip.
  • Use sleep only for a few days.
  • Adapt to the new schedule following local meal times and bedtime.

Melatonin can help you with the “jet lag” but nobody knows how long it can be used safely. Tell your doctor if you plan to take melatonin or other herbal or alternative medicine.

What about the pain in my ears?

If you ears hurt when you fly, try taking a decongestant medicine such as pseudoephedrine before boarding the plane. You can also swallow often and chew gum during the trip. Babies can suck on bottles or pacifiers during the flight.
