How to Control Diabetes

Diabetes is a common ailment, and it requires changes in lifestyle to be controlled. Medication and regular visits to the doctor are ¬†important. If a person with this disease doesn’t take treatment, their health can deteriorate. Therefore, it is very necessary to know how to control diabetes and know what steps must be taken to have a good quality of life.

Is diabetes serious?

First, you need to know why it is important to control diabetes. This disease can have serious consequences on your health if not treated right away. For example, if you suffer a heart attack or stroke, or eye problems, it can lead to blindness. Or, you may even lose a foot or leg due to a simple wound.

How can you control diabetes?

Many people avoid long-term problems of diabetes by taking good care of themselves. It is important to work with your health care team by visiting them regularly and heeding their advice. This can help you lead a life as normal as possible. Here are some tips you can follow:

– Eat healthy food like fruits and vegetables, fish, lean meats, skinless chicken or turkey, peas or beans, whole grains and low fat milk. Eat more fiber foods such as cereals, breads, crackers, rice or pasta and avoid foods with fat and salt. Consume about 100 g portions of fish and lean meat, baked, broiled or cooked on the grill.

– Ensure 30 to 60 minutes of physical activity most days of the week. Brisk walking is a great way to move more.

– Maintain a healthy weight.

– If you feel depressed, you can go to a support group or counselor, or a family member who understands you and supports you.

– Learn to deal with stress. Stress can increase blood glucose. While it is difficult to eliminate stress from your life, you must learn to handle it.

– Quit smoking.

– Take medication forever, even when you feel good.

– Examine your feet daily. Look for cuts, blisters, red spots and swelling. If you have a sore that does not go away, go to your doctor immediately.

– Brush your teeth and floss every day to avoid problems in your mouth.

– Check your blood glucose. Keep a record of the measurements you make, so you can see if you have any change.

– Control your blood pressure if your doctor recommends it.

– Report any change in your vision to your health care team.

With these tips and with a regular visit to your doctor (at least twice a year), you will feel better and you will reduce the risks of a worsening of the disease.
