Legionnaires’ disease it is an infection on the respiratory system. The disease, which is also known as Legion Fever, is caused usually by the bacteria Legionella pneumophila , this is a bacteria that thrives near water basins in a regions with warmer climate. The bacteria is not transmitted between persons, its transition from a person to person is done by inhalation of aerosolized water.  In cities usual place to appear is in hotels or big offices, or elsewhere where it can find greater tanks of water, especially hot, air conditioning systems etc.

If the bacterium is inhaled, most common symptoms are cough, which can be dry or produce sputum, fever and chills, other symptoms and signs that may occur in a patient are muscle ache, tiredness, headache, loss of appetite and coordination, even diarrhea. Most accurate way to detect the presence of the bacteria is by testing the sputum, there is a great chance, even in countries with well – developed health system, the diagnostic tests to be wrongly read and the disease missed. The wide range of symptoms is a distraction to physicians and it makes diagnose difficult.

The treatment of the disease includes antibiotics such as azithromycin and levofloxacin, Rifampicin is also used to treat the infected, although there are different opinions on the treatment of the infection with rifampicin. Usually antibiotics with good intracellular penetration are better choice for treatment. Mortality rate has been significantly lowered and is now under 5 %, if appropriate antibiotics are given in time.

Some prevention measures that can be taken in order to stop the bacteria reproduction is to put antibacterial agent in the water windshield reservoir in automobiles, proper and regular disinfection, such as ionization, in hospitals and other objects with bigger capacity and people.
