What is mitral valve?

The heart has four chambers. The mitral valve controls the flow of blood between the 2 cavities, called the left atrium and left ventricle. Normally, when the heart relaxes between beats, the 2 flaps of the mitral valve open to allow blood flow to pass from the atrium to the ventricle. The fins are usually open only on one side and the blood only flows in one direction.

What is a mitral valve prolapse?

If you have mitral valve prolapse, the mitral valve flaps do not work properly. One of the flaps moves back into the atrium when the heart beats. When this happens, blood can flow in the opposite direction from the ventricle to the atrium.

About 1 in 20 Americans have mitral valve prolapse. Generally, people are born with it. More women have it than men.

What are the symptoms of mitral valve prolapse?

Most people are unaware they have mitral valve prolapse, until a doctor discovers it during a physical exam. It is possible that some people have symptoms that include the following:

  • Feeling that your heart is racing or skipping beats.
  • Chest pain that occurs from time to time.
  • Shortness of breath.
  • Dizziness.
  • Anxiety or panic.

How is the mitral valve prolapse treated?

Most people with mitral valve prolapse do not need treatment. Only about 2 in 100 people with this condition have complications. Your doctor will tell you if you need treatment.

Some people with mitral valve prolapse have to limit participation in competitive sports. If the mitral valve prolapse causes chest pain or other symptoms, your doctor may prescribe medications such as beta blockers to improve symptoms. Some people need surgery to fix the valve.

What is abnormal uterine bleeding?

Abnormal uterine bleeding is any bleeding from the uterus different from the normal and usual monthly periods. How is abnormal uterine bleeding treated?

There are several treatment options for abnormal bleeding. Your doctor will help you decide what treatment is right for you. Or, if your doctor decides that a hormonal imbalance is causing the abnormal bleeding, it is possible that your doctor and you decide to wait and see if the bleeding gets better by itself. Some treatment options include:

Birth control pills. Birth control pills contain hormones that prevent the uterine lining to thicken too much. They can also help maintain regularity of their menstrual cycle and reduce cramps. Some types of birth control pills, especially the progestin-only pill (also called “mini-pill”) may actually cause abnormal bleeding in some women. Tell your doctor if you take the pill does not control the abnormal bleeding.

Hysterectomy. This surgery removes the uterus. If you perform a hysterectomy, you will no longer have periods or may become pregnant. Hysterectomy is major surgery that requires general anesthesia and a hospital stay. It may require a long recovery period. Talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of hysterectomy.

Intrauterine device (IUD). If birth control pills do not control bleeding, your doctor may suggest an IUD. One type of IUD releases hormones and this type can significantly reduce abnormal bleeding. Like birth control pills, IUDs can sometimes actually cause abnormal bleeding. What is plantar fascia?

The plantar fascia is a band of tissue, much like a tendon, that starts at the heel and runs along the sole. It connects to each of the bones of the foot pad. What is the cause of heel pain?

As a person ages, the plantar fascia is less like a rubber band and a rope does not stretch very well. The fat pad in the heel becomes thinner and therefore can not absorb the impact that occurs when walking. The additional impact damages the plantar fascia and can cause it to swell, to bruise or tear. You may notice a bruise or swelling in the heel.

Other risk factors for plantar fasciitis include:

What are the symptoms of Kawasaki disease?

Kawasaki disease can cause any of the following symptoms:

  • Fever.
  • Rash.
  • Red eyes.
  • Swollen lymph nodes.
  • Heart problems.
  • Joint problems.

What is the cause of Kawasaki disease?

No one knows what causes Kawasaki disease. Some doctors think it may be caused by a virus or bacteria. The illness can last from 2 weeks to several months.

How will my doctor know that my child has Kawasaki disease?

Your doctor will conduct a review to your child and ask about his symptoms. There is no special test for Kawasaki disease, but your doctor may do some tests to see if it is possible that another disease is causing the symptoms.

Children with Kawasaki disease have fever (sometimes as high as 104 ° F) for 5 days or more. Generally, they also have at least 4 of the following symptoms:
