What is Peyronie’s disease?

Peyronie’s disease is the name given to a condition in which the penis has a pronounced curvature. In some men, Peyronie’s disease is a mild problem without symptoms. Other men with Peyronie’s disease may have pain during erections or erections that are rigid enough not to have sex.

What is the cause of Peyronie’s disease?

Scar tissue beneath the skin of the penis causing the curvature. Nobody knows why the scar tissue appears. Some men with Peyronie’s disease have had a penis injury that causes scar tissue. The scar tissue feels like a bump or a row of tiny bumps. Scar tissue can continue to worsen during the early years and make the curvature of the penis becomes increasingly pronounced. You might notice this more during an erection. After some years, usually, scar tissue stops worse, but does not disappear.

What can I do about the curvature of my penis?

There is no cure for Peyronie’s disease. Medicines like aminobenzoate potassium or vitamin E help some men. Potassium aminobenzoate is a prescription medication.Vitamin E is available without prescription. If you take vitamin E, do not take more than your doctor tells you. Too much vitamin E will not help with your problem. Too much vitamin E and potassium aminobenzoate can damage the liver. The potassium aminobenzoate also may make you nauseous or take away your appetite.

Another treatment option is an injection into the lesion. This means that the doctor would give you an injection directly into the scar tissue. The injection contains the drug verapamil.Verapamil may help break down scar tissue and allow it to grow new tissue. Generally, these injections are given over 3 months.

Can surgery help?

Surgery may help men who have pain during an erection or men who can not keep an erection long enough to have sex. There are several surgical procedures that can help. One option is to be placed a prosthesis (something to make the penis is firm) in the penis. The prosthesis helps to straighten the penis. It also helps erections last longer. Another option is the removal of scar tissue of the penis. Your doctor can discuss all surgical options and can help you decide what is best for you.
