What is the treatment for a sore throat caused by bacteria?

If your sore throat is caused by bacteria, it is likely that your GP may prescribe an antibiotic. It is very likely to start feeling better within a few days, but it is very important to all antibiotics prescribed by your doctor. This reduces the risk of throat back pain and also helps prevent antibiotic resistance.

What is the treatment for a sore throat caused by a virus?

Antibiotics do not work against viruses. Usually, infections caused by viruses simply must run its course. Most of the symptoms caused by a type of cold virus go away within a week to 10 days.

Symptoms caused by mono can last for 4 weeks or more. If you have mono, it’s likely that your doctor suggests you get plenty of rest and not exercise too intense. You can take acetaminophen (one brand: Tylenol), ibuprofen (some brands: Advil, Motrin, Nuprin) or naproxen (one brand: Aleve) for sore throat, headache and fever. Children should not take aspirin.Aspirin can cause serious illness called Reye’s syndrome when given to children under 18.

What about the sore throat that is caused by allergies?

How to relieve sore throat

  • Take acetaminophen (one brand: Tylenol) or ibuprofen (one brand: Motrin) to relieve pain. Children should not take aspirin. Aspirin can cause serious illness called Reye’s syndrome when given to children under 18.
  • Gargle with warm salt water (1 teaspoon salt 1 cup [8 ounces] of water).
  • Suck on throat lozenges or hard candy.
  • Suck on flavored frozen desserts (such as Popsicles).
  • Use a humidifier in your bedroom or other rooms where you spend much time.
  • Drink plenty of fluids. This helps keep the throat lubricated and prevent dehydration.

If I have tonsillitis, will I need to have a tonsillectomy?

Tonsillectomy is a surgery that removes the tonsils. Most people who have tonsillitis do not need a tonsillectomy performed. You may need a tonsillectomy done if you have severe tonsillitis often or if the tonsils are too large and cause breathing problems. Your doctor can tell you if a tonsillectomy is required.

How I can avoid contracting or spreading a sore throat?

The best ways to avoid catching or spreading viruses and bacteria that can cause sore throat are to wash their hands regularly, avoid touching your eyes or mouth, and covering your mouth when you cough or sneeze.
