Do you know what the symptoms of pneumonia are? It would be useful to know them, because sometimes, pneumonia is confused with flu symptoms — as pneumonia also starts with a cough and high fever.

Pneumonia is a disease that involves inflammation of the lungs caused by infection. This infection can be caused by a virus, a bacterium, a fungus or parasite, and may present itself as mild or severe, depending on the case. For example, in people who are over 65 years of age and have  respiratory and immune system problems, pneumonia may even be fatal.

Although dependent on the age and general health of the person, the symptoms of pneumonia include:

– Fever
– Body temperature lower than normal (in the elderly)
– Tos
– Fatigue
– Headaches
– Muscle aches
– Breathing difficulties
– Chest pain
– Sweating

When to visit the doctor?

If you can not stop coughing, can’t hardly breathe, have an aching chest and your temperature does not fall below 39º C with chills, sweating and other symptoms of pneumonia, you should call the doctor urgently. Call your doctor also if you start to feel worse when you have a high fever or flu. Follow these instructions if you are elderly, if you smoke or consume alcohol regularly, if you have an injury, if you follow a chemotherapy treatment or if you take medications such as prednisone.
