Are you suffering from digestive problems? Do you often have stomach pains or heartburn? Have you been diagnosed with IBS? If the answer to all these questions is “yes”, then there are foods you should avoid for you to protect your vulnerable digestive system

The following foods that are consumed in excess, can damage the good functioning of the digestive system. Know them to know what NOT to incorporate in your diet when you have a stomach ache.

Fried foods and fatty foods

It goes without saying too much, right? Abuse of these foods can increase acid reflux and heartburn. Excess fat also can cause steatorrhea, which is the accumulation of fat in the stool. It is recommended for those who suffer from irritable bowel to avoid these foods, so as not to aggravate digestive problems. The same advice goes for those who have recently had stomach pain.

If you want to prevent stomach upset, heartburn, acid reflux or gastritis, you should avoid eating spicy foods. Peppers have strong flavors that can irritate the esophagus.

Alcohol disinhibits, relaxes us, but unfortunately also “loosens” the esophageal sphincter, which can cause heartburn or acid reflux. In short, if you drink too much alcohol, you can suffer from inflammation in the lining of the stomach, which prevents the absorption of nutrients. This also damages the work of certain enzymes. Those suffering from gastrointestinal disorders should moderate their consumption of alcohol.

Calcium is an essential mineral in our diets. Consumption of dairy products is one of the most effective ways to incorporate in our bodies. However, for many, it can cause upset stomachs, especially for those who are lactose intolerant. This is a very common disease that occurs when the body does not produce enough lactase enzyme, which is what breaks down lactose (the natural sugar in milk).

Given this anomaly, when lactose intolerant people consume dairy products, they may experience symptoms such as diarrhea, cramps, gas and bloating. Therefore, if you have lactose intolerance, you  should avoid milk and dairy consumption to prevent these symptoms. You can consume calcium from green leafy vegetables, for example.

Strawberries are wholesome fruits that provide many health benefits. However, they have a downside because of its small seeds. These seeds can cause infections in people suffering from diverticulitis, an inflammation of the large intestine. But nonetheless, there is still no studies that prove it. If you suffer from diverticulitis, it is also good to stay away from sunflower seeds or pumpkin seeds.

Coffee, tea and soda

These beverages relaxes us, but it can also stimulate acid reflux, and also may act as diuretics, which consequently causes diarrhea or abdominal cramps. Those who suffer from heartburn or gastroesophageal reflux disease should avoid drinking caffeinated beverages.
