What you need to know about Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar Disorder is a serious mental illness characterized by mood swings from mania to depression which may lead to suicidal tendencies if not treated.

Mania describes the sufferer being energetic, talkative, reckless, powerful, also highly productive etc. and depression pictures the person being lethargic with loss of pleasure and sense of worthlessness.

The mania can last for weeks to months in some patients where as in others it can rarely even be for years.

TYPES OF BIPOLAR DISORDER:

Type 1: The sufferer experiences mania for a longer period of time with psychotic symptoms.

Type 2: The sufferer has episodes of mood swings (i.e. hours or few days) without psychotic symptoms.

LIVING WITH:

Living with bipolar is challenging but proper treatment of disorder would leave you with a good life.

  • Take medicines to prevent mania, hypomania (less severe mania) and depression every day for a long term basis
  • Learn to recognize the signs that trigger the episodes
  • Take psychological treatment for depression, advices for having good relationships and on improving your diet and getting more sleep.
  • Add to your lifestyle the activities that give you a sense of achievement; also, engage in exercise, plan activities that you enjoy.

THERAPY:

Psychotherapy or talk therapy: To discuss out the problems and give advices to patient and relieve his mania.

Behavioral therapy: Focusing on behaviors that decrease stress.

Cognitive therapy: learning to identify and modify patterns of thinking that accompanies episodes of mood swings.

Social rhythm therapy: helps maintaining a good daily routine.
