Tomato is undoubtedly one of the most common vegetables. Some of the reasons for its popularity is its versatility and the generous amount of health benefits it brings along with it.
Tomatoes can be added to many different dishes and ingested in a wide variety of ways. One of the best ways in which we can incorporate the benefits of this vegetable is in the form of juice. Tomato juice is a super nutritious beverage that provides our body with a wide range of benefits and therefore allow us to stay healthy.
To incorporate a new ingredient to our healthy diet, we bring some of the benefits of tomato juice to our daily diet.
Lycopene. The major component of tomatoes is lycopene. Lycopene is what gives tomatoes their red color and it is a substance having numerous antioxidant properties that help in preventing cancer. Lycopene acts as an antioxidant protecting cells and organs. In addition, it has been found to help protect DNA and white blood cells.
Vitamins and Minerals. Tomato juice is also a great source of vitamins and minerals, especially vitamin A and C. A cup of tomato juice provides up to 74 percent of the recommended daily value of vitamin C and 2 percent of vitamin A. These vitamins help our immune system by destroying free radicals that enter the bloodstream and damage cells. Other nutrients that are also found in tomato juice are vitamin K, B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, potassium, magnesium, iron and phosphorus.
Cholesterol. Tomato juice is otherwise an excellent natural treatment for high cholesterol. This is a very good source of fiber that acts by breaking down the LDL (bad cholesterol) and that coupled with the presence of vitamin B3 increases its effectiveness.
Heart disease. The Vitamin B6 found in tomatoes helps the body to break down a compound called homocystene, that is characterized by damage to blood vessels and cause diseases of the heart.
